The Hawks have been impressive on the cross country course all season, and their collective hard work paid off at Friday's NCISAA 4A Cross Country Championship. The girls' team earned the program's sixth state title, while the boys' team collected 25 points for Latin in the Wells Fargo Cup with its sixth place finish.
The girls' team entered the meet under high expectations, coming off of a CISAA conference championship performance, while the boys' team was slightly overlooked in the shadows of state powerhouses Christ School and Cary Academy. Nevertheless, their assignment was the same: Compete as a team and claim as many top-50 spots as possible.
As stated by the NCISAA, cross country team points are decided by the position each runner attains against other teams. To qualify as a full team you must have at least five runners and no more than seven runners. The first five will score for their team and 6 and 7 will displace. On the girls' side, the Hawks placed all 7 runners in the top 34, and on the boys' side, in the top 57. All-State honors go to the top 11 finishers. Jackson DiRoma and Lucy Ratterree came in 12th in their respective races, narrowly missing joining Mary Cate Kiser (10th) and Helen Hurden (4th) as part of the All-State team.
Congratulations to the entire cross country team, its coaches, and its supportive parent community on an incredible season!
