Senior Helen Hurden was the first place finisher in the girls' 2022 CISAA Cross Country Championship, leading her fellow Hawks to a CISAA girls' team title. The boys' team was led by junior Jackson DiRoma and senior Will Vaughn, who helped their younger teammates achieve a fourth place finish in a competitive field.
Hurden's impressive time of 18:35.2 was a personal best by more than twenty seconds and places her third in the Latin girls' cross country all-time list. She is now the fifth CLS athlete to win an individual CISAA championship, and the first since 2016. Senior Mary Cate Kiser dropped 14 seconds from her previous best to finish 5th, followed closely by Lucy Ratterree, Bridget Yu, and Maggie Klingman to round out the Hawks' scoring top 5.
DiRoma battled through illness to make 1st Team All-Conference, while Vaughn's competitive pass in the final stretch on his way to a 15-second PR earned him ninth place and 2nd Team All-Conference. Freshman Webb Kiser smashed the 18-minute barrier and sophomores William Austin and Ethan Khouri also had significant time drops to finish in scoring position.
The middle school teams had similar personal success. The Hawks reaped the benefits of months of training and competition experience, closing out the season with a slew of best times including several improvements of more than one minute. Eighth grader Caroline Staffieri led the girls team with a PR of 13:44.2 to finish 21st, and seventh grader Jackson Kerr cut twenty seconds from his best time to finish 9th in 11:20.7.
Overall, across middle school and varsity, an incredible 82% of the Hawks turned in a lifetime or season's best time. Congratulations to all of the athletes, their coaches, and the families that supported them!
