Service and Community-Engaged Learning

Living a life of service is foundational to a Latin education.

each division provides age-appropriate ways for students to engage with the community.
Guided by our school’s Principles of Good Practice for Community-Engaged Learning, our students think critically about the ways in which they can make a lasting impact in their respective communities, whether at school, locally in Charlotte, or globally around the world.

6 Principles of Good Practice for Community-Engaged Learning

Community Partners

Latin intentionally creates partnerships with local organizations that can extend beyond the classroom and any one person’s time at Latin. With a commitment to our Principles, we take pride in our current school-wide partnerships.

  • Habitat for Humanity of the Charlotte Region

Each division has also identified specific community-engaged learning opportunities and partnerships that reflect its students' learning and curricular aims.

Good Neighbors Latin recognizes that our campus and accompanying resources can support organizations as they create a more caring community. With this idea in mind, we support many organizations by providing the necessary gym space to hold practices throughout the year.

Habitat for Humanity

Charlotte Latin is the first private or independent school in the country with a senior class that funded and built a Habitat for Humanity House.

The Latin community has funded and built four Habitat houses and regularly assists with Habitat builds both locally and in El Salvador.

Latin Service Society

Latin’s Service Society encourages Upper School students to participate in various Community-Engaged Learning experiences and recognizes students who make significant contributions to the community through service.

Using a reflection-based model, students interested in joining the Service Society are asked to complete various reflections throughout their four years in the Upper School. With guided reflection prompts at each grade level, students build their critical thinking skills to better understand how their engagement in the local community shapes their understanding of self, community, and others.

Latin does not have a formal requirement of service hours for graduation. We believe that our students find meaningful ways to engage in the community through our school-based partnerships and their familial-based organizations.
