Student Leadership Development

ROOTED IN VISION, LIVED OUT EVERY DAY

Leadership, an important part of Latin's founders' vision for the school in 1970, continues to be a Core Value.

Developing robust leadership capabilities is fundamental to our students' success at Latin and throughout their lives beyond our campus. Leadership isn't merely taught at Charlotte Latin — it's woven into the very fabric of our institution, deliberately cultivated across all classrooms and community experiences. Beginning with our Leads with Honor program in Lower School, every student embarks on a progressive journey of leadership development that continues seamlessly throughout their Latin experience.

The Portrait of the Latin Leader serves as our guiding framework, establishing a common language and understanding of leadership behaviors across our community. This comprehensive vision connects theory with practice, providing clarity and purpose to our leadership initiatives. We invite all members of our community — students, parents, faculty, staff, and alumni — to deeply engage with the Portrait and discover how it meaningfully informs our educational approach and illuminates our Core Values.

Charlotte Latin School

"At Latin, we are committed to cultivating socially responsible and ethical leadership in every student. Servant leadership isn't simply an aspiration—it's the cornerstone of our mission and values. We believe that leadership potential exists in all students, transcending formal positions or titles. Beyond our covered walkways, we prepare our students to meaningfully contribute to broader societal conversations and to build thriving communities founded on shared values and collective well-being. Through intentional practice and guided reflection, we empower our students to become catalysts for positive change in an increasingly complex world."David-Aaron Roth

PORTRAIT OF
THE LATIN LEADER

At the heart of it all is the Portrait of the Latin Leader — our shared framework that defines and inspires leadership across campus. It gives our community a common language to name it, claim it, and live it.

Service and Community-Engaged Learning

Living a life of service is foundational to a Latin education. In each division, students identify age-appropriate ways to engage in the community. Guided by our school’s Principles of Good Practice for Community-Engaged Learning, our students think critically about the ways in which they can make a lasting impact in their respective communities, whether at school, locally in Charlotte, or globally around the world.

Speech and Debate

Whether delivering arguments in a competitive setting or navigating complex global issues in a simulated diplomatic forum, our students learn to think on their feet, engage respectfully with diverse perspectives, and express themselves with purpose. These experiences, both in the classroom and in competition, empower students to find their voice — and use it meaningfully in the world.
