Why I give to Latin:
We chose Charlotte Latin for our children because of the relationship the school fosters with both the child and the entire family. We believe in the Mission of the school and often use the phrase “Honor Above All” at home. We give to Charlotte Latin to support the many opportunities provided to the students for growth and development.

Mary Gorman '00, Capital Campaign Manager

Mary Gorman joined Charlotte Latin in August 2017. Prior to joining the development team at Latin, Mary served as the Director of Marketing and Communications at Edison Nation, a Charlotte-based startup dedicated to bringing innovative new product concepts to market. Previously, Mary lived and worked in Seattle at Richmond Public Relations, exploring the Pacific Northwest and managing media relations for a variety of food and travel clients.

As the Capital Campaign Manager, Mary is responsible for carrying the campaign from start to finish through strategic planning, organization and relationship management. A member of Latin’s Class of 2000, Mary serves on the Alumni Governing Board, planning events and programming that fosters engagement between alums and the School. Mary received her B.S. in communications from Boston University.

Outside of Latin, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Ryan, where they’re always on the move with their daughter, Virginia, and two German Shepherds, Bear and Archie.

Why I give to Latin:
My family moved from New Orleans to Charlotte when I was in the fifth grade. It didn’t take long before I found my place at Latin. Latin instilled in me a strong sense of community and a wish to work hard and achieve that enabled me to explore and push my own boundaries after graduation. I am proud to work here and I’m proud to give to Latin because I believe in the Latin experience and the foundation it builds for each student. By giving to Latin, I’m helping to preserve what makes our School so special for so many people.

Emily Pinkerton, Major Gifts Officer

Emily Pinkertonemily.pinkerton@charlottelatin.org
704.846.7292

Emily joined Charlotte Latin in April of 2016 after serving as Director of Alumni Relations at Queens University of Charlotte. During her role on the advancement team at Queens, she learned of the importance of people to a nonprofit – that those closest to an organization are its best cheerleaders, most generous donors, and greatest advocates. Fostering meaningful relationships with these individuals can help move mountains and is what makes this work highly rewarding. Prior to holding several roles during her tenure at Queens, Emily spent four years in event planning at the Duke Mansion and GMR Marketing. Emily is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and the Mint Museum Auxiliary. She enjoys entertaining family and friends at her home, exploring all that Charlotte has to offer, and soaking up sweet moments with her husband and young daughter. She received a B.S. in Leisure and Sport Management from Elon University.

Why I give to Latin:
I give to Latin because I am a member of a team – a team called to support the mission and vision of this School. My advancement background has instilled in me the desire to support causes, no matter the amount, because participation matters. It matters because it shows outsiders how much an organization’s people care. It matters because it creates a spirit of teamwork among insiders. I’m grateful to work at Charlotte Latin and happy to contribute to a fund that keeps the School thriving.

She proclaims herself to be an adventurer and thrill seeker, and she enjoys outdoor experiences such as skydiving, camping and hiking in the wilderness, and jumping from ocean cliffs.

Why I give to Latin:
I give to the Latin Fund because in the short time I've been employed at Charlotte Latin, the School has given so much to my family. The sense of community and excellence is astounding; the entire School has supported and embraced me as a staff member in ways that my monetary contribution could never compare. In addition, I believe in supporting the institution that has provided my daughter with a whole child-centered educational experience for the past three years. My husband and I have already seen the benefits, and we are very fortunate and grateful to be a part of the Latin family.

Sally Gray Smith '82, Director of Alumni Relations

Sally joined the Charlotte Latin Development Office team in 2006 after working in the asset management group at Bank of America for 15 years. As the Associate Director of Development, Sally is responsible for planning all alumni activities and events, such as Reunion Weekend, regional gatherings, and other networking and social events throughout the year. Sally works with the Director of the Latin Fund to oversee alumni giving initiatives, such as the Alumni Phonathon and the Latin Fund's March Madness Program. She also manages the Alumni Governing Board and Class Agent volunteers and alumni social media platforms. Actively involved in Latin student life, Sally manages the senior class' Observe and Serve Program. She also serves on the Board of Trustees of Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center and is a class agent for Davidson's Class of 1986. Sally and her husband are the parents of two sons who are Charlotte Latin graduates (Classes of 2014 and 2015), one of whom she coached for many years on one of Latin's Odyssey of the Mind teams. A member of Charlotte Latin's Class of 1982, Sally is a graduate of Davidson College, where she received a B.S. in mathematics.

Why I give to Latin:
My Charlotte Latin education is one of the greatest gifts my parents gave to me. It prepared me for the rigor of college academics and shaped who I am today. Eric and I made the decision to give the same gift of what we believe is the most interesting, challenging and well-rounded educational journey, to our boys, Griffin '14 and Gray '15.

I believe in the mission of Charlotte Latin and value the relationships between the faculty and students. It is with gratitude for Latin's teachers that I give to the School with the knowledge that, if it's not those same superior teachers, it is others who are like them, teaching and inspiring another Latin student. By giving to the Latin Fund, I get to be a part of preserving this tradition.
