![]() Dear Latin Families, As I wrote in my last message to you, given the number of confirmed cases of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Charlotte Metrolina today, and out of an abundance of caution, we will start spring break early tomorrow, Friday, March 13, for students. We asked all students to pack their books, devices, and chargers and to take them home today. Faculty and staff will report to Latin tomorrow and continue working on the Academic Continuity Plan in preparation for the possibility of Remote Learning. We moved from Risk Level 3 to Level 4 today; I anticipate that we will move to Level 5 over Spring Break, which will move us to Remote Learning. In an ideal world, this won't be necessary, but again, out of an abundance of caution, we are preparing for this eventuality. Please refer to the Pandemic Threat Decision Matrix for the full actions at each of these levels. If we do have school on campus after break, we will share details with you about pick-up, drop-off, and other measures taken to keep students and teachers healthy. Things are changing very quickly. We advise everyone to frequently check the school calendar for event suspension, rescheduling, and cancellation. Important Information and Updates Cruise Ship Travel The CDC recommends that travelers defer all cruise ship travel at this time and the U.S. Department of State says that U.S. citizens should not travel by cruise ship. We have added a question about mode of travel to the Spring Break form. If you are taking a cruise and have already completed your form, please amend it with information that you are taking a cruise. Additionally, at Level 4 and above, anyone taking a cruise over Spring Break must self-quarantine for 14 days and notify the school. Alumni on Campus We love our alumni, but Risk Level 4 and above restricts their being on campus. If you have an alum in your household, please let them know that we do this out of an abundance of caution — and that we are also restricting parents and others who come to campus. Student Activities Center and Athletics Facilities All facilities on campus are closed to everyone until Tuesday, March 24. International Travel over Spring Break The school is asking families to follow the WHO, CDC, and U.S. State Department travel guidelines. We expect families to self-quarantine if they have visited a Level 3 or 4 country. Please note that in this extremely fluid environment, travel advisories can change. Reminders • No school for students on Friday, March 13, and Monday, March 23, for teacher work days to prepare for possible Remote Learning. • School resumes on Tuesday, March 24. • Campus, including the SAC and athletics facilities are closed to everyone the week of spring break. • Grandparents' Day, originally scheduled for April 9, will be recorded on April 8 and shared with you. We will not have an audience. There is no school for students on April 9. • Keep asking questions or share your concerns using the online form. I will let you know if/when the decision is made to move to Remote Learning as soon as possible. As mentioned above, my guess is that we will move to Level 5 over break, with a confirmed Coronavirus (COVID-19) case in the Latin community. Level 5 triggers remote learning. Know that we are working on expectations for teachers, students, and parents for Remote Learning and will be sharing that with you soon. Thank you to everyone for your understanding and assistance in working through this extremely challenging time. Please monitor www.charlottelatin.org/coronavirus, Welcome to the Week, and other email communications regularly as dates/events are subject to change. Travel safely and have a healthy Spring Break. Sincerely, ![]() Chuck Baldecchi Head of School
