Charlotte Latin School Celebrates 50 Years
Mayor Vi Lyles Visits Campus on Founders' Day
Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte Latin School first opened its doors on September 9, 1970. Today, 50 years later, students arrived on campus with a variety of special plans in store to celebrate this momentous day — Founders' Day.
Mayor Vi Lyles greeted Head of School Chuck D. Baldecchi and founding board member Mr. Robert V. Knight and and proclaimed to a stadium full of students, teachers, staff, alumni, retired faculty and special guests that September 9, 2019 is officially, "CHARLOTTE LATIN SCHOOL DAY" in Charlotte. "I commend its observance to all citizens," said the Mayor.
More than 1,400 students wore navy blue anniversary t-shirts and participated in special Founders' Day events including a school-wide photo, art project, cookout lunch, a Blessing Bag service learning project, scavenger hunts, storytelling, skits and playtime. The Carolina Raptor Center released a rehabilitated broad-winged hawk in commemoration of our anniversary. The grand finale was a pep rally in the Beck Student Activities Center.
"This school would not exist were it not for the forethought and vision of our founders. Likewise, the orchestration of a day like today could not be possible without countless volunteers and innumerable hours of preparation and planning. Tremendous gratitude to Mayor Lyles, our special guests and the 50th Anniversary committee for the time and effort that made today possible," said Mr. Baldecchi.
