Varsity Football



Overview


The varsity football team won the NCISAA Division II Championship in 2017 and the NCISAA Championship in 2016. With the retirement of Larry McNulty after more than 30 years of service, Justin Hardin takes over head coaching duties in 2018.

Coaches


  • Head Coach
    Justin Hardin
    Coach Hardin has extensive head coaching experience at the high school level, but 2018 will be his first season at the helm of the Hawks' football program. He first coached at Latin from 2007-2009 as an assistant to Larry McNulty in both football and track and served as a strength and conditioning instructor. After head coaching stints at Weddington, Providence and Independence high schools, he returned to Latin as an assistant in 2016. The Booster Club awarded him the Newcomer Coach of the Year in 2007 and the Assistant Coach of the Year in 2017. Coach Hardin achieved a state championship as quarterback at A.L. Brown High School in Kannapolis, then played for The Citadel where he earned his degree in health exercise and sport science.
  • Assistant Coach, Defensive Coordinator, LB

    Drew Dayton

    Dayton played defensive back for Wake Forest University, where he earned a degree in political science before moving into coaching. He joined the Latin coaching staff in 2018, but previously has coached football at UNC Charlotte, Duke University, and Lenoir-Rhyne University. He teaches P.E. in addition to serving as the defensive coordinator for varsity football and an assistant coach to middle school softball. Dayton and his wife, Laura, have a daughter and two sons.

  • Assistant Coach, Defensive Line
    Kim Cousar
    A 2016 inductee into the North Carolina Baseball Coach Association’s Hall of Fame, Coach Cousar’s career began in 1978 at Anson Junior High. He's coached more than 80 players that continued at the collegiate level, and nine that were signed or drafted by professional teams. Cousar is a multi-year winner of Conference Coach of the Year and Region Coach of the Year and has been leading the Latin Hawks on the diamond since 2012. In addition to running the baseball program, Coach Cousar teaches Middle School P.E. and is an assistant coach for the Varsity Football team.
  • Assistant Coach, Defensive Backs

    Christopher James

    Coach James was a four-year scholarship football player for Gardner-Webb University. A former safety, he primarily works with the defensive backs as an assistant coach with the varsity football team. Coach James earned his MBA from Gardner-Webb and is now a teacher with Union County Schools.

  • Assistant Coach, Quarterback


    Coach Boone joined the Latin coaching staff in 2017 as an off-campus assistant to the varsity football and baseball teams. A Weddington High School and Duke University graduate, Boone played under Coach Hardin for one season in high school, where he also earned All-Conference honors in baseball. Boone finished his career at Duke University as the winningest quarterback in school history, earning MVP honors and NFL prospects.

  • Assistant Coach, Wide Receiver

    Marquel Willis
    Willis joined the Latin football staff as an assistant in 2017. As a three-sport athlete from Summerville, SC, Willis played one season of football at The Citadel before transferring to Coastal Carolina University to finish his education. After college, he played six years of arena football with the Green Bay Blizzards, and now works as a personal trainer with OrthoCarolina.

    Jack Williams

    Jack Williams joined the Latin coaching staff in the summer of 2018 as an assistant with the varsity football team, primarily working with the cornerbacks. Williams played for Kent State in Ohio and was drafted by the Denver Broncos and later signed to the Detroit Lions. His coaching experience includes Providence, Independence, and Porter Ridge High Schools.

  • Assistant Coach

    Ed Winder, Assistant Coach

    Winder joined the coaching staff in 2018 as an off-campus assistant to the varsity baseball team and later added support to the varsity football team. He grew up in Long Island, NY, where he played on the offensive/defensive line in football and as a right fielder and catcher in baseball.
