Physical Education

The goal of the Physical Education Department at Charlotte Latin School is to promote life-long health and wellness through exposure to fitness activities, team and individual sports, health education, and team-working challenges.

To reach this goal, we teach the students the basic skills, strategies, and rules for many traditional and non-traditional games and activities.  Our hope is that students will find activities that they enjoy and will continue to pursue later in life and that they will acquire the skills and the discipline necessary to be lifelong exercisers.  In doing so, we also have the opportunity to teach them important social skills, such as how to conduct themselves in competitive situations, how to behave towards opponents and officials, and how to win and lose gracefully.  We promote the ideals of “Honor Above All” in every moment that we are together.

Through the use of a distinct low and high challenge course, Middle and Upper School students tackle unique obstacles that promote the Latin Leads with Honor attributes in a small group setting.

The course is designed to inspire leadership, encourage problem-solving, and enhance a sense of community. The concept of “challenge by choice” is used to create an environment where appropriate risk-taking is encouraged for students to navigate these obstacles.

Through the process, students become aware of self, others, and the impact made on each other.

Hawks Quest Challenge Course

Nestled into our beautiful 128 acres of woods is one of the most unique classrooms at Latin, Lamm Challenge Course.  Wander down the trail until you hear voices cheering each other on, possibly from 30 feet in the air, and you’ll find Scott Moulton, Hawks Quest Director, and his service dog Natalia facilitating a class of Physical Education students on the course.

Consisting of fifteen low elements and three high elements, Lamm Hawks Quest course and the program associated with it is designed to help our students develop competencies in problem solving, communication, empathy and social awareness, among other social emotional skills. Scott knows just when to give a prompt or redirect the group and when to stand back, applaud their efforts and watch them come up with a new plan. There is a role for everyone, regardless of one’s comfort level, and we promote the idea of “Challenge by Choice,” ensuring that everyone in the class feels that they can be a part of the solution.

The most important part of a Hawks Quest class may be the guided reflection that follows the experience. This allows students to take what they learned from their time on the course and apply it to other areas of their lives. Self-reflection and active listening skills are practiced and developed, bringing students closer to each other and helping them gain an understanding of the perspectives and feelings of their peers. Working together to solve a challenge builds bonds, and doing so in a beautiful setting like this creates lasting memories.
