The purpose of this annual assembly is to honor those students who have given their time, energy, and talents to help others. The honorees this year fall into two categories: Presidential Service Award winners and Latin's Class of 2022 Service Society inductees.

Presidential Service Awards are awarded to any Upper School student who has performed 100 or more qualifying hours of service within one calendar year (ours runs from June 1 to May 30). If a student has performed between 100 and 175 hours, they receive the Bronze award; 175 to 250 hours, the Silver, and 250 or more, the Gold. This year, four recipients were recognized.

To be eligible for Charlotte Latin's Senior Service Society, graduating seniors must have completed 150 or more qualifying service hours during their time in the Upper School. If a student enters Latin in the tenth or eleventh grade, the hours are prorated for society consideration. This year, 18 seniors were inducted into the society.

The Class of 2022 documented more than 7,500 hours of Service since their 9th-grade year with close to 2,000 of those hours during this school year alone. In the last four years, the Class of 2022 has served just more than 325 organizations with more than 75% of the class participating. "And while these numbers are impressive, and certainly quantify the good work our students are doing in their community, the numbers don't necessarily reflect the most important aspect of service, which is making a meaningful impact on the lives of others," says advisor Stuart Bonner.

It is also the hope of Latin's Service Learning Committee that in completing these impressive numbers, the students are able to see the world through another person's eyes, thereby teaching cultural competency, critical thinking with a growth mindset, the importance of engaging with and advocating for others, and the development of leadership skills that will foster a life-long interest and passion in community engagement.
