High Honor for Director of Teaching and Learning

Dr. Marta Filip-Fouser, still in her first weeks at Charlotte Latin School as the Director of Teaching and Learning, has already received significant recognition: the Institute of Global Learning (IGL) has named her its Global Educator-in-Residence for the 2026–27 school year. Dr. Sonja Taylor, Associate Head of School, explained, “Each year, the IGL selects one global educator in residence and one climate educator in residence, who represent thought leaders in their respective fields. I am elated to have such a respected colleague on our academic leadership team. She is an amazing thought partner and a gifted contributor to the conversation about the value of global education for all learners.”
Speaking of the honor, Dr. Filip-Fouser said, “Global learning is part of my DNA.” Born in Poland, she has also lived in Sweden, Jordan, and Spain; she noted, “I see learning as something that happens in the classroom, but extends beyond.” She said that the work she is doing to document and assess Latin’s curriculum is informed by the best practices in global education: “I see this as an opportunity to look at the courses that we teach, how we teach them, how we assess learning, ways for students to demonstrate what they’re learning, and bridging the classroom experience with the world.”
IGL, formerly known as Global Educators’ Benchmark Group, partners with over 400 schools in 22 different countries. The honor for Dr. Filip-Fouser means more than a plaque; she pointed out that it provides an opening for Charlotte Latin to tap into that international network. “It’s a great opportunity to collaborate and see what works at other schools and find out what we can learn from them,” she said. “And vice-versa.”
