Freshmen Wellness

Before leaving for break last month, the freshman class enjoyed a complimentary breakfast in Founders Hall followed by a fun and inspiring Wellness Program. The morning’s activities centered around mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing—aligning with Charlotte Latin’s commitment to whole-child education and to create a positive and empowering environment for students (Strategic Plan Goal 3: Community Wellness).

First, students heard from Andrew Gibson ‘09 who spoke about living Latin’s core value: Honor Above All. Andrew encouraged students to be true to themselves by sticking up for what they believe in, even if it differs from their peers’ views. He shared a personal reflection and urged students to think about how their actions and treatment of others make a lasting impact. His wish for the Class of 2027 is that they take care of and look out for one another.

Next, students rotated through small-group activities. In the Beck Student Activities Center, freshmen played classic games of four square and kickball—a fun and physical way to decompress before winter break. Executive Director and Co-Founder of Youth Meditation, Angela Gala, and Na-il Diggs P ‘26 taught students how to use intentional breathing to focus the mind before a big test, a big game, and further. Citing examples from his time in the NFL, Na-il Diggs described how he used breathing techniques on the sidelines to still his mind before a game.

Closing the program with a remarkable story of resilience, Carson Clough ‘12 shared with students the boating accident four years ago that resulted in a below-the-knee amputation of his right leg. Carson had to relearn how to walk, bike, swim, surf, and run. With service dog Calder at his side, he encouraged students to take care of themselves first in order to be in a better position to help others. Carson is the co-founder of Giddy Goat Coffee Roasters and competes internationally as a member of the U.S. Elite Paratriathlon National Team. relearn
