Exploring Culture Through Food: A Cookbook Club

Last school year, Latin’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion started the Exploring Culture Through Food: A Cookbook Club for current parents. Each gathering spotlights a culture and a cookbook. Recipes are assigned, prepared by attending guests, and shared. There’s discussion around the food, the cookbook, and the culture they are experiencing. It’s a way for parents to connect over a shared love of food, building community through a shared interest in exploring different cultures.

The Exploring Culture through Food: Cookbook Club recently gathered to explore Indian culture and cooking. There were 16 parents who joined, sharing 15 recipes from Maya Kaimal’s cookbook, Indian Flavor Every Day.

Parent and CLS faculty member Nidhie Dihman P ‘27 helped lead the discussion about Indian culture and cooking, and how it varies based on the area you may live or travel in India. Some dishes may have the same name, but have different flavor profiles. Some recipes shared included Rasam and Rice Soup, Herby Roasted Potatoes, Tandoori Cauliflower Steaks, Classic Saag with Crispy Paneer, Golden Temple Dal, Red Lentil Dal with Spinach, and Spicy Ginger Snaps.

The Exploring Culture through Food: Cookbook Club will get together again on February 23. Stay tuned for details on what culture and cuisine will be explored next. To learn more or get involved, please reach out to Erica Moore.
