Endowment Named for Fletcher Gregory

On Tuesday, April 19, Fletcher Gregory, Chuck Baldecchi, and Denny O'Leary made their way to their 4 p.m. Executive Committee of the Board meeting. It was a bright and breezy spring afternoon, and they were early — perfect conditions for a campus stroll. As they turned the corner at the foot of the Inlustrate Orbem steps, however, Fletcher spotted his wife, Mary, and knew something was up. A crowd of friends and colleagues, past board members, decades-long vendors, alums, and parents had gathered to celebrate Fletcher. Mr. Baldecchi welcomed guests and thanked Fletcher for his outstanding judgment and for his commitment to Latin. "When Fletcher's in the room, I know we're going to make the right decision," he said.

Board Chair Denny O'Leary announced The Gregory Endowment for Service Learning, established by former and current Board members, "In honor of your incredible service to Latin and your passion for Service Learning. We are the beneficiaries of your great wisdom and strong character." The Endowment, an effort led by Lynn Crutchfield, will provide resources for Service Learning opportunities for Latin students for many years to come.

"I was expecting maybe a pat on the back, not a big crowd," a humble Fletcher laughed as he thanked those in attendance. "Service was very important to our daughter, Mary Salem. It became her life's work, and much of what she learned, she learned right here. We want Latin students to be servant leaders. We need to make sure we never forget to teach them the importance of service to others beyond our world at Latin. Mary and I are grateful for you to honor our family in this way."

Before a plaque near the water feature was revealed, Fletcher, who will retire in June, closed by saying that Latin has always been a home away from home for the Gregory family, "I'm looking forward to July 1, but I'm not leaving." He will stay on to help the Office of Philanthropy with the important work of a Planned Giving program. "I won't be visible, but I'll be present. Thank you for your friendships."

The plaque which recognizes Fletcher and the endowment reads:
