CLS Director of Global Studies, Kelly Willis, visited the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Visitor Center in Maryland this summer. She recently shared her personal reflections on what she learned about Tubman's abolitionist leadership as part of the Underground Railroad, Union Army as well as Tubman’s Civil Rights legacy with Diversity Club members, US History, and English 11 students.

Some of these classes are studying famous narratives of enslaved people and reading Octavia Butler's Kindred (with its allusion to Tubman) and were encouraged to attend and discuss with Ms. Willis and Mr. Harris connections with their studies and to consider a field trip to the Eastern Shore's Harriet Tubman Center. 

Mr. Harris and Mrs. Willis presented to students during Activity Period; it was a standing-room-only attendance and an illuminating representation of interdepartmental co-leadership and collaboration among the English Department and Global Studies and DEI Offices.
