Charlotte Latin sweeps 25% of Gold Keys at the 2024 Regional Mid-Carolina Scholastic Art Awards

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have an impressive legacy dating back to 1923. Over the years, they have grown to become the longest-running, most prestigious program for creative teens in the U.S. and the nation’s largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers. A noteworthy roster of past winners includes Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Richard Avedon, Robert Redford, Joyce Carol Oates, Stephen King, and John Updike.

This year 2,030 works were submitted by talented artists across the region. Out of the 109 schools and art programs that competed—spanning 27 counties in North and South Carolina— Charlotte Latin swept the competition by winning 25% of the Gold Keys!*

Additionally, two of our students were nominated for the prestigious American Visions Award which is an incredible honor: Will Patti '28 (MS) for “Flashing Fragments” in the category Expanded Projects and Madison Nabors ‘25 (US) for “LEAH” in the category Drawing & Illustration. This award recognizes the very best artwork in the region, and our school's representation of MS and US works across multiple categories further highlights the breadth and depth of our students' artistic abilities.

To have our students' artwork recognized and celebrated in this highly competitive event is a remarkable achievement. Not only does it shine a spotlight on Charlotte Latin’s commitment to fostering student voice and artistic excellence, but it demonstrates that our Visual Art program is among the top in the region.

We are immensely proud of students for their outstanding accomplishments and well-deserved recognition. This success is a reflection of their hard work, creativity, and passion for Visual Art. It is also a testament to the guidance and mentorship provided by our visual art teachers—Anne Cammer, Clark Hawgood, and Richard Fletcher—who have nurtured and inspired our students to reach their full artistic potential. Congratulations to all!

*All of our Gold Key students will move on to the National Level.
