Charlotte Latin School Honors America's Veterans

On Monday, November 11 — Veterans Day — Charlotte Latin School honored those who served in the American armed forces, risking their lives to protect our liberties. Chuck Baldecchi, Head of School, began an Upper School assembly by recognizing the 18 veterans in attendance, all members of the Latin community, and thanking them for the sacrifices they made “to keep our nation’s light shining bright.”

Air Force Major Alex Beaussart ’07, who addressed both Upper School and Middle School students in Thies Auditorium, detailed his current work as Chief of Current Operations for the 756th Air Refueling Squadron. In midair, he explained, the planes he oversees can transfer 200,000 pounds of fuel: “about 30,000 gallons, enough to fuel your average sedan from here to the Moon.”

Looking back at his time as a Hawk, Major Beaussart remembered, “Charlotte Latin challenged me and provided me with a laboratory where I could develop.” Applying lessons from his military career, he encouraged students to find mentors, to help peers who were struggling, and to adopt the mantle of leadership. “Although some people have more natural leadership ability than others, everyone has the potential to be a leader,” he said. “Start by being a good friend and a good teacher.”

Lower School students also commemorated Veterans Day: in their case, with a “Patriotic Sing,” musically celebrating the United States. Joyfully belting out songs ranging from “America the Beautiful” to “This Land Is Your Land,” they were united in music — and in the knowledge that this land was made for you and me.
