Blumey Nominations Honor Cabaret Performers

The Upper School production of the musical Cabaret, which premiered in Anne’s Black Box in February, was a gripping theatrical experience for the Charlotte Latin community: set in a 1930s Berlin nightclub in the shadow of the rise of the Nazi party, a student cast and crew brought the show’s characters to life and made them feel relevant to the year 2026.

Now the Blumey Awards has spotlighted five of those Latin performers for the commitment and talent they brought to that show. Blumenthal Arts annually honors achievements in Charlotte high school theater: this year, 59 area schools submitted shows for consideration. The finalists in each category will be pared down to shortlists of nominees before the Blumey Awards ceremony, presented by Bank of America, is held at the Belk Theater on Sunday, May 17.

The five finalists from Latin (and the roles they played in Cabaret): Flinn Teichman ’28 for Best Actor (the Master of Ceremonies), Michaela Maldfeld ’27 for Best Actress (Fraulein Schneider), Max Colaco ’26 for Best Supporting Actor (Herr Schultz), Sophia McGirt ’27 for Best Supporting Actress (Fraulein Kost), and Kate Warner ’26 for Best Featured Performer (Gorilla Ballerina).

Matt Cosper, Director of Theater Arts and director of Cabaret, commented, “The work our students do is remarkable. Every year I'm blown away by the spirit, intelligence and dedication they bring to our stages. To have our students recognized for their efforts by the larger community is icing on the cake. I look forward to celebrating with our kids at the Belk Theatre on May 17th!”
