Athletic Hall of Fame Inducts Six Hawks

Last week, the Charlotte Latin School Athletic Hall of Fame inducted its sixth class, honoring some of the individuals who have exemplified the best aspects of the school’s athletic program: Haylee Dawe ’11, Claudia Dickey ’18, Joey Holder ’93, Coach Lee Horton, Daniel Jones ’15, and Tonya Phifer ’97.

At an induction ceremony on September 19 at the Myers Park Country Club, Head of School Chuck Baldecchi said in his opening remarks that the Hall of Fame’s new inductees “set the standard of what it means to wear the white and blue and they show our current students what it looks like when you succeed at the highest level. Tonight, we honor their excellence, we honor their toughness, we honor their sportsmanship and we honor their pride.”

The following evening, the members of the Hall of Fame’s class of 2024 unveiled a commemorative plaque at the Belk Students Activity Center and were celebrated at halftime of the Varsity Football team’s 19-14 victory over St. Pauls High School.

Haylee Dawe led her Latin teams to eight state championships (four cross country and four track & field). She was also an individual state champion in Girls’ Cross Country in 2010; a crucial part of a trail on the Latin campus is named “Haylee’s Hill” in her honor.

Claudia Dickey distinguished herself in soccer, primarily as a goalkeeper (her Hawks were four-time state champions), and in basketball as the starting point guard. She was unable to attend the induction ceremony because she is in the middle of the professional soccer season, as goalkeeper for the Seattle Reign.

Joey Holder won seven state championships in three different sports (soccer, basketball, and track); as a senior, he was a captain for his teams in all three sports. In his senior year, he was ranked as being in the top three male athletes for all of Mecklenburg County by the Charlotte Observer.

Lee Horton coached the Varsity Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer teams from 1985 to 2022. During that time, he accrued over 1,000 victories and won 19 state championships (7 with the boys and 12 with the girls). In 2010, the undefeated girls’ team was ranked number one in the nation.

Daniel Jones was a three-year letterman in football and basketball, winning the Varsity Football state championship in 2014. He was unable to attend the induction ceremony because he is in the middle of the professional football season, as quarterback for the New York Giants.

Tonya Phifer excelled in softball, basketball, and track. On the Girls’ Basketball team, she was a two-time state champion and was twice named an All-State player. She was also twice named an All-State player and was the Charlotte Observer Player of the Year.
