The Hawks competed in 390 games, matches, and meets between February 21 and May 21, capping off the spring season with three varsity championships that concluded about 24 hours before Charlotte Latin's graduation. It was a busy and successful few months! The varsity girls' lacrosse team claimed its third consecutive NCISAA championship, the girls' soccer team was the NCISAA runner-up, senior Madeleine Pease won an individual title in the girls' high jump, all of the spring varsity teams made it to the playoffs, and the middle school boys' golf and middle school boys' lacrosse teams won the GCMSAA conference championship. Additionally, three Hawks were named CISAA Players of the Year, and two new records were established in girls' track and field. Read on for seasonal summaries provided by the coaches of each team. Middle School Baseball

From Coach Smith: The middle school baseball team finished the season with an overall record of 6-7. The team was competitive throughout the season and split games with several teams that finished above them in the final conference standings. The Hawks beat both Covenant Day and Providence Day in extra inning thrillers and Country Day 11-1 in the first round of the CISAA tournament. Contributions were made by many different players and this group will be a foundation of the baseball program for years to come.

JV Baseball

From Coach Pontin: The JV baseball team continued its goal of providing the freshmen and sophomores with valuable game experience. Led by a new coaching staff this year, all of the Hawks showed remarkable individual improvement. Brayden Hampton, Jack Mosrie, Jack Bancroft, Hudson Shoup, Cameron Teal, Jackson Coble and James Peters all contributed greatly to the success of the varsity team as well when being called up. Andrew Kriessel continued to prove himself as a solid arm on the mound for the Hawks, while Cameron Teal and Jackson Coble showed themselves to be solid future prospects for the program. James Peters made a big leap forward in his development throwing mostly varsity innings. Base running this season was emphasized through a strong performance by Hudson Shoup on the base path. This team remained tough and responded to adversity well all season long!

Varsity Baseball

From Coach Cooke: What an incredible season it was! After a 2-7 start to the year the Hawks won 13 of their final 15 games which included a 9-game win streak at one point. The 15-9 overall record is one of the best seasons Charlotte Latin baseball has experienced in nearly 20 years. The culture was outstanding this season led by our four seniors Dave Mosrie, Max Rimler, Sam Lucas and Thomas Hullinger. Ryan Sweet had an incredible junior campaign leading our pitching staff going 7-1 with a 1.76 ERA and earning NCISAA All-State honors. The Hawks look to build off the momentum of this season with several younger starters returning from this year's squad.

Middle School Boys' Golf

From Coach Edwards: The Middle School boys' golf team had quite the successful season. The team finished with an undefeated record, going 10-0, and won the Conference Tournament. This was the deepest MS boys' golf team in CLS history as seven players were within range of qualifying for the top four slots for the end of season tournament. Aston Lee finished the season with a stroke average of 35.8, the first player in CLS middle school boys' golf to finish the season averaging under par. All nine guys improved over the course of the season. It was so much fun to coach a team with such good guys that are also such good golfers. We wish our 8th grade golfers luck next year in high school and look forward to the return of our excellent core of 7th grade golfers.

Varsity Boys' Golf

From Coach Berger: The Hawks finished the season with a 6-6-1 record, including a 2nd place finish in both the CISAA Conference Championship and the NCISAA State Championship. At the NCISAA Qualifying Event the Hawks finished tied for 3rd at the Grandover in Greensboro. The team then competed in the NCISAA Final Four at Bryan Park in Greensboro. The Hawks finished runner up in the state tournament with a score of 304. The Hawks had three players earn All-Conference and All-State honors: Jack Dannemann, Wilson Thrift, and Davis Sayman. The team graduates three seniors: Jack Dannemann (LSU), Quinn Edwards (Univ. of Georgia), and Wilson Thrift (Auburn).

Lacrosse - Middle School Boys

From Coach Ivey: The Hawks concluded the 2022 season with a 7-4 record, including thrilling back-to-back one-goal victories over #1 seed Charlotte Country Day School (7 - 6) and #2 seed Providence Day School (10 - 9) on their way to winning the postseason conference tournament. The expectations for this group were high, as they were the returning conference champions. While there were a number of challenges and some difficult stretches along the way, they continued to press on and ultimately ended the campaign playing their best lacrosse. Charlotte Latin is laying the groundwork for some very competitive seasons at the Upper School level, and as coaches we're looking forward to seeing what the future holds for these players.

Lacrosse - JV Boys

From Coach Grosse: The 2022 JV Lacrosse season was one marked by growth. Led by first-year goalie, Landon Lashley, the boys were asked to play positions they have never played before. This resulted in a better understanding of the overall game. With our limited roster size it would be understandable for the team to waiver late in games, especially at the end of the season. However, the boys bonded over the challenge and continued to out-work opponents. We are extremely proud of their development as players and as a team.

Lacrosse - Varsity Boys

From Coach Sipperly: At the beginning of the season, we spoke of the Native Americans from whom the game of lacrosse originated and spoke of the "Creators Game." The game was used to heal the sick and solve disputes among clans. The Creator looked upon those who play as strong warriors. A quote we spoke of was from an Onondaga elder who said, "We have lost a lot of games but we have never been beaten." This season reflected some of that sentiment, we did lose a lot of games but the team fought and were never beaten. We played hard for 48 minutes each game, we represented our families and school well. This was one of my favorite groups to coach, we all love each other no matter of grade or position. We played for each other. Hopefully everyone can come out of the season loving lacrosse for what it is, the game the "Creator" has given us to test our strength, courage, endurance, skill, toughness, teamwork and, most importantly, for the opportunity to play this wonderful game.

Lacrosse - 7th Grade Girls

From Coach Olson: This 7th grade girls' lacrosse team, comprised mostly of players new to lacrosse, came to the season with a contagious energy and a desire to win. They worked very hard to improve their skills and learn the game. The successes that came with team work and collaboration provided motivation to practice and play with focus and intensity and finish their season 2-4-2.

Lacrosse - 8th Grade Girls

From Coaches Bri Young and Taylor Alexander: This middle school 8th grade team is a special group. With many returning players and a handful of new, they were able to come together and pull out some memorable wins like beating our rival, Country Day! This group of girls really worked hard on and off the field and always brought positive attitudes to practice. Many girls really fell in love with the sport and had a great time. All showing up every day wanting to learn and be better. Overall, we're very proud to see this group grow and evolve into experienced lacrosse players!

Lacrosse - JV Girls

From Coach Crigler: The JV girls' lacrosse team had an exciting and competitive season. The girls battled hard throughout their 14 games and left it all out on the field with a final record of 8-6. The team was determined and committed throughout the season to work on their skills, learn from their mistakes, and dominate on the field. We were challenged in our conference but came out with a 3-2 record. On our last home game, we were able to honor our 11th graders with a "Junior Night" and beat the Bucs 10-5! It was a great way to wrap up the season and we look forward to improving our skills on the field next season!

Lacrosse - Varsity Girls

From Coach Williams: 18-4 was not only the winning score of the state championship game but also our season record. This year's team had the goal of defending their state championship from the previous two years. This group of seniors have won the state championship every year in high school. The only year they missed was the 2020 Covid year. This team faced the hardest strength of schedule that we have ever had with losses to only one North Carolina team and three out of state teams. We also had a signature win against the NCHSAA Champion - Cardinal Gibbons. When they talk about a team being ALL IN, I would say that this defined this group of athletes. They were together from the beginning and that closeness culminated in that State Championship game. We had 13 players who scored more than 10 goals this season with 7 players scoring more than 20. We had a 77% shot percentage with 340 goals this season. We could not only score, we could also defend. We had the highest caused-turnover stat that we have ever had. Our draw team was highly successful with a 68% draw control percentage. Our goalies had a 62% save percentage. These numbers are spectacular but what made this season special was how these players treated each other. There was love, respect, laughter, and kindness on the field. They worked hard for each other. It was always about the team. We will miss our seniors, but they have laid a foundation of success that will continue throughout this program for years to come.

Soccer - Middle School Girls

From Coach Spraul: The growth that we saw in our team throughout this season was really fantastic! It was a lot of fun to watch our girls who were hesitant to take players on early in the season fearlessly going at defenders time and again in our final games. We asked every player to play at least 2 different positions throughout the season, and each of our girls really stepped up and gave it their best, even if they were playing in a role way out of their comfort zone. Our girls did a wonderful job supporting and encouraging each other, working back to cover for any mistakes, and bringing their best for our team in practice and in games. Our team captains Kate Wagner and Marisol Wickham were excellent leaders and cared for their team so well. We had a lot of 7th graders this year, so we're looking forward to continuing to build next season. Thank you to our 8th graders for all that you've put into the soccer program! We will miss you but are excited to see your success at the next level!

Soccer - JV Girls

From Coach Bonner: The 2022 JV Hawks came together as a team to play their best football at the end of the season. This is what all teams strive to do: improve throughout the season's campaign to be at their very best by the end. So in the last two weeks of the season, the Hawks shared the ball in creative ways, defended with strength and courage, adopted a free-flowing style of play when possessing the ball, scored some beautiful goals and enjoyed some spirited practices. The players developed with respect to their soccer IQ as well as we shifted formations a number of times and players found themselves playing in different positions. Regardless of any changes, the players kept the focus on the team before individuals and showed their quality as players and people. Over half of the goals we scored came from assists and the goalkeepers collaborated to preserve two shutout wins. The JV Hawks finished with a record of 4-3-2 and second in the conference. Most importantly, the coaches are proud of the junior class' leadership and their inspiration in helping form the team bond that has created lasting memories for both players and coaches alike. Go Hawks!

Soccer - Varsity Girls

From Coach Horton: Our goal is always to win the state championship. What a season!!! I had an incredible group of girls (26 of them) for my last season. The culture was as good as it has ever been. They loved being together, and they competed like no other!!! We were conference champions in easily the best conference in the state. We lost a heartbreaker by penalty kicks in the NCISAA championship game, but I was very proud of our team's performance. Our opponent, Providence Day, was very good and it was a VERY worthy championship game!!! The coaches and players loved practice, games, and just being together. It will be a season I will never forget.

Softball - Middle School

From Coach Dayton: The 2022 Middle School Softball team fought for its best season in recent memory. Continuing to build on the success of 2021, this year's squad tallied a 10-3 record and a berth in the Top 4 of the MS Softball Conference Tournament. Our ladies overcame a 9-run deficit in the first round of the playoffs versus Lake Norman Charter to go on to win 13-9, earning a spot in the conference championship game vs Holy Trinity. Despite an early lead and a wonderful pitching performance by Avery Bly, the team was unable to hold off Holy Trinity and ultimately settled for a second place finish. There were many highlights from the year including, but not limited to, both Holden Gore and Avery Bly accounting for three home-runs and Avery's 2.85 ERA (60 innings pitched). Leadership from 8th graders Holden Gore, Avery Bly, Lindsey Boone, Ananya Banerjee, and Ramona Cigler lead the 2022 roster to an undefeated record versus Cannon, Providence Day, Charlotte Christian, Charlotte Country Day, Metrolina, and Covenant Day.

Softball - Varsity

From Coach Banda: Many goals were reached this season: earning the program's first win in several years, our pitchers leading the league in regular season strikeouts and earning a playoff bid since 2015, earning a home playoff game and winning a playoff game. We also had a First Team All-Conference player (Talia Hawa). I am very pleased with the growth of the entire program this season. We have been working to build a cohesive middle school through varsity program that emphasizes skills, accountability and community. We are starting to see the shift in culture within the softball program and the future is bright. We are so thankful for the support of the softball families and players.

Tennis - Middle School Boys

From Coach Coumas: In middle school boys' tennis, our team finished strong especially since we only had three really experienced players and only nine players on the roster. We had a 2-7 record in the regular season. Unfortunately we had four rainouts, as well as injured and ill players that really made a difference in at least two key matches. We lost to Covenant Day twice in the season but very narrowly the second time. Our boys were hopeful they would get one more shot at them, and we ended up playing them again in the finals after defeating Country Day in the semifinals. Our team turned on the afterburners with some impressive wins. Our final score against Covenant Day was 8-2! Winning our section of the draw in the playoff tournament brought our record to 4-9. Team awards were given to Clayton Hahn (Most Improved), Charlie Stubbs (Leadership & Sportsmanship), and Wilson Zhang (MVP for winning 17 or his 21 matches). I thoroughly enjoyed coaching this great group of guys!

Tennis - JV Boys

From Coach Drury: Charlotte Latin's boys junior varsity tennis team was a high-spirited group who quickly came together as a fun-loving, hard-playing team. This relatively inexperienced group achieved an impressive winning record of 7-3. Though anchored by four returning sophomores, the team included 6 freshmen, a sophomore transfer from out-of-state and several athletes with little or no previous competitive tennis experience. The season included convincing wins against Charlotte Catholic, Marvin Ridge High School, Providence Day School and Cannon School. Calvin Ehrenburg, at Line 1 (6-3), showed competitive play with his vastly improved backhand and court coverage in his still-developing singles game. Freshmen Chanakya Ayinala (3-2) Neshanth Gaddam (3-3), and Andrew McDonald (3-3) contributed with single wins in the upper half of the line up. Solo Boyake and Nathan Butler finished out the season with wins in the lower half of the line up. Freshmen Chanakya Ayinala and Andrew McDonald (5-3) were a talented doubles pair who displayed solid teamwork and continuous improvement throughout the season.

Tennis - Varsity Boys

From Coach Hall: The boys' varsity tennis team had a very competitive season, despite very tough competition and losing 6 players (5 starters) from last year's team. Thomas Davis, Emilio Lllerenas Soto, and freshman Andrew Chen handled most of the heavy lifting at the top 3 positions, and we got solid play at the lower half by Hayden Willett, Christopher O'Leary, and Ryan McDonald. Charles DeMey, Devan Amin, Alex Troni, Carter Babcock, Rohan Nadkarni, and David Tian all contributed to the team's success in matches during the season. The Hawks finished tied for 3rd with Cannon in the CISAA conference, and finished the season 10-10. In their most complete match of the season, the Hawks went toe-to-toe with eventual champions Cary Academy in a 4-hour match before falling to them at Duke Indoor in the quarterfinal round. Andrew Chen was named 1st Team All Conference, while Thomas Davis and Emilio Llerenas Soto each earned spots on the Second Team.

Track & Field - Middle School

From Coach Bonner: I was really excited coming into this season. We almost doubled in size from last season, which gave us lots of options to work with this year. There were so many great performances, both team and individual. I was extremely proud of how the team soaked in all the information that was taught throughout the year and transformed in to a well-rounded team. It was a very young team, so I'm looking forward to what the future brings for next year!

Track & Field - Varsity

From Coach Taye: It has been a busy season for the Charlotte Latin track and field athletes! Our seniors were phenomenal as leaders and team captains. Senior captain Madeleine Pease bested her school record in the high jump multiple times throughout the season, achieving a new mark of 5'3", and winning both the CISAA Championship and the NCISAA Championship. In addition, Mada helped the girls 4x400m relay break the school record by 5 seconds. Mary Schleusner, Nina Lavelle (senior captain) and Maggie Klingman were the other participants in the record-breaking 4x400. Junior captain Will Vaughn made history by participating in his first and the school's first-ever decathlon event placing first at the Raven's Relays. The 4x100 relay team led by senior Daniel Haughton, senior and team captain Davis Thompson, Sam Haines and Rykin Maxwell moved up to the #3 all-time in this event. Another team captain and a senior, Harrison Klingman, is leaving his mark by moving up to the #3 spot on Latin's all-time performance lists in 1600m and 3200m. Senior captain Nina Lavelle made school history with top-three Latin all-time performances in 100m and 200m. Junior Morgan Smith, a newcomer to the pole vault, tied the second-best mark in school history and finished third at the NCISAA Championship. Senior Morgan Stradford moved to 2nd place in Latin school history for the triple jump and remains in 2nd place for the long jump from her achievement during the 2021 season. Jackson Scott also moved up to third place on the Latin all-time list in the triple jump. At the CISAA championships, hosted by Latin, both boys and girls teams finished 3rd overall behind PDS and CDS. At the NCISAA championships, Hawks finished 4th in the girls and 5th in the boy's divisions, respectively.
