Evan Li's essay "Henry Waxman: A Speaker in the Silence" received an honorable mention in the 2023 Profile in Courage Essay Contest. With 2,199 essays submitted by students in fifty states, it is a tremendous accomplishment to have received this recognition. In May, Evan will receive a certificate and a hardcover copy of Profiles in Courage. A national press release recognizing Evan's accomplishment is forthcoming, and Evan will also be listed on the JFK Library website by mid-May. Mr. Harris commends Evan for once again representing Charlotte Latin School so well in a prestigious writing contest and for being a role model of a student writer who demonstrates moral courage and an honorable civic ethos in sharing his personal convictions in writing with our community, our region, and our nation both last year in his "Coming of Age" New York Times winning piece "An Ekphrastic for Asian Melancholia" and this year in his Scholastic gold award-winning critical essay "Strange Bodies: A Biomythography of Queer Asians In and Beyond the United States" and now in this Profile in Courage essay of his celebrating the Honorable Representative Henry Waxman who, although relatively unknown, was central in bringing awareness and spurring responsible government action in responding to the AIDS crisis. The Kennedy Library Foundation promotes the involvement of young people in public life. By taking the time to research and write about a politically courageous public figure, the Foundation applauds Evan for exhibiting an interest in public affairs and understanding the political courage demonstrated by elected officials who strive to make a difference for the greater good. With a conviction to break the silence and apathy among so many in society, leaders such as JFK and Henry Waxman and student writers such as Evan Li' 24 represent the very definition of leadership and the core values celebrated by our Latin community.
