Middle School Students Shine at Model UN Conference

Kudos to the five Charlotte Latin School students who distinguished themselves at the Middle School Model United Nations conference at Appalachian State University! Issues addressed at the conference, hosted by the International Relations Association at ASU on March 26, included inflation, human rights abuses, and refugee resettlement.

Eighth graders Addy and Lucas, representing Argentina, were honored as “Best Delegates” at the end of the conference. They distinguished themselves by drafting resolutions to address the current instability in Syria and Venezuela, and were persuasive enough to gain the support of other members of the Security Council. The conference’s organizers cited not only the exceptional clarity of Addy and Lucas in presenting their own ideas, but the respect with which they treated other delegates.

In addition, three Latin sixth graders attended the conference, ably representing three different nations: Henry (Sierra Leone), Christopher Warner (Saudi Arabia), and Henry (Mozambique). “The learning curve with Model United Nations is pretty steep in the beginning,” says Middle School teacher Kari Wimbish, also the advisor to the Middle School Model UN Club. “You have to get the hang of the parliamentary procedure in addition to understanding your own country's foreign policy as it relates to global issues. Henry, Henry, and Christopher jumped right in, raising their placards to make motions, building resolutions, and working the room to rally support for their plans.”

Congratulations to Addy, Lucas, Christopher, Henry, and Henry — your school is proud of you!
