Latin Student Promotes Financial Literacy Among Teens

Personal finance, credit card management, and investing aren’t usually at the forefront of conversation for teenagers, but Yaz Hathiram ’28 and seven other area high school students are determined to change that. Working through the Economics Awareness Program (EAP), a Charlotte-based nonprofit, they’re on a mission to make real-world economics education available for free to students everywhere.

Recognizing the connection between financial literacy and future success, EAP student cofounders Eric Yule and Alex Shi began offering free webinars to their peers in June 2023. Their efforts quickly gained momentum and attracted widespread support, including Yaz and fellow volunteers. In the span of just a year, EAP achieved 501(c)3 nonprofit status, which allowed the group to apply for grants, attract more funding, and broaden their reach. They also began hosting expert guest speakers, workshops, and networking events.

“This summer's full-scale elevation of the Economics Awareness Program was by no means an easy process,” Yaz confessed, “but with many late nights of hard work and dedication we got the job done.” Yaz leads the business sector of EAP and plays a major role in outreach and building strategic networks.

Under the guidance of professionals in the community, EAP also developed the curriculum for two online courses — Personal Finance and Economics — available for free to any student anywhere. The self-paced courses are comprehensive and engaging, “similar to Khan Academy,” said Yaz, “complete with progress tracking features.” EAP’s plans for the future: connect with students through outreach events and help schools create local chapters.

In recognition of their efforts to promote financial literacy, Yaz and six chapter associates were honored by Charlotte Mayor Pro-Tem Danté Anderson during a special luncheon with the Asian American Business Community at the Charlotte City Club on September 5, 2024. Congratulations, Yaz — your school is proud of you!
