The Strategic Plan Implementation Team, which was established to manage realization of the Plan’s initiatives, reports that considerable progress has been accomplished this year, particularly in support of Goal #2:
“Consistent with its values and mission, CLS will increase, honor, and celebrate our community’s rich diversity of talents, backgrounds, and circumstances to promote inclusiveness and respect for individuals and their accomplishments.”
(Initiative 2.A.1) The Diversity Committee members have been working hard on Goal Two initiatives. They have defined diversity for the School through their mission: “Charlotte Latin School will create an effective learning environment that accepts all people. As a community of learners, the School believes that a deep understanding of differences is necessary to its overall mission.” (Initiative 2.A.2) The Committee also has been researching other independent schools to examine and determine the best models to increase diversity at CLS.
(Initiative 2.A.8) To include diversity issues in professional development opportunities, “Race: the Power of an Illusion,” a three-session workshop, is being offered to teachers and parents. Race deals with the biology, history, and economics of race. (Please refer to page XXX.) In addition, an introductory workshop on “Facing History and Ourselves” will be offered to teachers on June 5, 6, and 7, 2005. Facing History is an interdisciplinary approach that uses inquiry, analysis, and interpretation to examine moral questions in American history.
(Initiative 2.B.5) The Parents’ Council has amended its by-laws to appropriate a minimum of 20% of its available cash annually to the School’s endowment. These funds will be used to support a number of initiatives, including those supporting diversity.
(Initiative 2.C.1) The Parents’ Council is working with Director of Technology Susan Davenport, Database Manager Meredith Nelson, and Director of Web Services Mike Richardson to develop a database of the expertise, talents, interests, and life skills possessed by members of the Latin community. The database will serve as Speakers’ Bureau resource for teachers and students.
(Initiative 2.E.5) In order for students to showcase their unique talents and interests, as well as to honor one another, “Kudos for Kids” is available on MyLatin. This feature allows parents and students’ to share students’ accomplishments outside of school with the CLS community.
