What is an independent school?

Charlotte Latin is an independent school as opposed to a private school. The two types of schools are similar in that they are not government managed or funded, but there are important distinctions.

A private school is an elementary or secondary school that is managed and supported by private individuals, a corporation, a religious organization, or some other non-government or public agency.

According to the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), an independent school is distinct from other schools in that it is primarily supported by tuition, charitable contributions, and endowment income, rather than by tax or church funds. Charlotte Latin is a member of NAIS, which requires that member schools adhere to high standards and guiding principles. To be eligible for NAIS membership, a school must be independently governed by a board of trustees, practice nondiscriminatory policies, be accredited by an approved state or regional association, and hold not-for-profit 501(c)(3) status.
