At all age levels, the art program gives students the opportunity to explore various media, from painting to ceramics and sculpture. The art curriculum is sequential. Students learn basic skills and are exposed to various media in Lower School, which are based on classical techniques and themes. These skills are reinforced and further developed in the Middle School, including the study of works of art by the great masters. By the time a Charlotte Latin student reaches Upper School, his or her mastery of basic techniques and appreciation of classic forms allow the pursuit of projects based on each student's talents and interests. This exploration is guided by the art teachers, who help the students stretch their artistic curiosity.
Artwork by Latin students is continually exhibited throughout the campus as well as in the Charlotte community. Over the past 27 years, Latin students have received more than 1,700 regional honors and 51 national medals in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards and Congressional Art competition. In the last 10 years, students have won 12 American Vision Awards and 27 Best in Category Awards. Fifty seniors have received special recognition for their portfolios, with two receiving Best Portfolio in the regional competition. Seven pieces of art by Latin students have been featured in national publications.
