Charlotte Latin School will support Habitat El Salvador with the funds raised from its Thanksgiving All-School Service Project. Students, parents, teachers and alumni are joining together to raise funds to construct homes in El Salvador, a country where 51% of the residents are without adequate housing, due in part to several natural disasters that struck the region over the past five years. Students will earn money from doing chores at home and hosting a variety of fundraising activities, including bake sales, dress down days, a football tailgate and “Shake that Habitat” salsa dance lessons sponsored by the CLS Dance Team.
Charlotte Latin’s mission calls for the School community to serve others. The Latin community has a long-standing relationship with Habitat for Humanity through routine participation in local builds and raising the funds and helping to construct four Habitat houses, including one in Louisiana for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Latin’s Service Learning Committee sponsors the all-school service project annually to express the gratitude of the Charlotte Latin community and to celebrate the Thanksgiving season. The projects selected alternate each year between local and international organizations. Previous beneficiaries have been Samaritan’s Shoes, Heifer International, Classroom Central and “Baskets of Hope” for the United Family Services Shelter for Battered Women in Charlotte.
