Renowned sculptor Tom Clark visits Latin

Dr. Tom Clark, sculptor and lead artist for the internationally renowned Cairn Studio located in Davidson, N.C., visited Upper School art students on Thursday, Oct. 22. He spoke to students about sculpting techniques, his approach to art, and and his path to becoming a full-time artist.

Clark is one of the most prolific and talented sculptors in the country, and is known for his whimsical gnomes. He was an associate professor of theology and religious art at Davidson College for more than 25 years before he decided to concentrate on his art full-time. Inspired by the cover art on the popular book Gnomes, he began sculpting gnomes in 1978.

Clark has a determined approach to his work. “I want you to react (to the art),” he told students. For this reason, every gnome in the Cairn Studio collection is sculpted with a smile.
