Fourteen of the 28 football players on the North Carolina team in the Oasis All-Star Shrine Classic on Nov. 28 are from Charlotte.

Players from seven Charlotte schools – Charlotte Christian, Charlotte Latin, Providence Day, Charlotte Country Day, Victory Christian, Northside Christian and Hickory Grove - were named to the N.C. team, which will play South Carolina at 1 p.m. at Memorial Stadium, in the all-star game for independent schools.

The game, organized by the Charlotte-based Oasis Shrine Temple, is for seniors. It debuted at Latin in 2005. All proceeds benefit the Shriners Hospital for Children.

The event is similar to the Shrine Bowl, which is in its 72nd year, but doesn’t include private-school players. The Shrine Bowl is operated by five Shriners temples in the Carolinas. Oasis withdrew seven years ago.

Charlotte Christian’s honorees are linemen Zach Cook and Zach Orsino, receiver/defensive back Jonathan Miller and kicker Wil Kamin.

Latin’s picks are running back Carter Barnhardt, receiver defensive back Ross Cockrell and fullback/linebacker Mark Ernsberger. Two-way linemen John Benson and Kip Haddock will represent Charlotte Country Day.

Victory Christian lineman Curtis Porter and running back Michael Staton were chosen, with Hickory Grove receiver/defensive back Landon Adams, Providence Day running back Terrell Tyrance and Northside Christian defensive lineman Sylvester Crawford.

Another N.C. player from an Observer-area school is Jonathan Williams (Concord First Assembly).
