First grade students listen intently as Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Rodney Monroe speaks about his job duties on Thursday, May 7. Chief Monroe worked in Washington, D.C., and Richmond, Va., before becoming Charlotte’s police chief. “I love being a police officer,” he said. “I can’t imagine doing anything else.”
Monroe took questions from the students and noted that the best part of his job is “being able to help people.” He encouraged students to “do the right thing," and discussed the mentoring programs that police officers participate in to teach children to be "smart about life."
At the end of his visit, Chief Monroe presented each student with an honorary police badge.
