Three of the five Charlotte Latin teams that recently competed in the North Carolina Odyssey of the Mind tournament April 10 have advanced to the OM World Finals, May 26-29, at Michigan State University.

First- and second-place teams qualified for the World Finals. Charlotte Latin’s Taylor/Lax team advanced to the World Finals in two categories.

Charlotte Latin’s middle school OM students also received two awards at the state tournament. Fourth-grader Ashley Derrington received the Omer Award, given “to recognize an individual (or team) who demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship, exemplary behavior and exceptional talent.” Derrington was nominated for the award by OM judges in her team’s division.

The school’s Hammond Team received the Ranatra Fusca Award, which is “presented to teams or individuals who exhibit exceptional creativity through some aspect of their problem solution, their behavior or an extraordinary idea beyond the problem solution.” The team was nominated for the award by its division judges and the state captain for the category.
