Charlotte, N.C. - Charlotte Latin School students Betsy Brooks, Lana Chiad and Breea Sharma are the recipients of national awards in the 2009 Scholastic Art and Writing competition.
Brooks, an eighth grader, received a Gold Medal for her drawing, “Self-Perception;” Chiad, a junior, received a Silver Medal for her humorous writing piece, “Writer’s Block Recovery Program;” and Sharma, a senior, received a Gold Medal for her photograph, “Victim.”
This year, 140,000 works were submitted to 81 regional affiliates for the Scholastic competition. Ten thousand works were honored as regional Gold Key winners and were subsequently reviewed by panels of professionals in the visual and literary arts for the national awards. One thousand of those works have received Gold Medals, Silver Medals and American Vision and Voices Medals.
These accomplished students will be honored at national celebration events in New York City, including the National Awards Ceremony at Carnegie Hall on June 4.
