Commemorating Kristallnacht

Latin's Upper School choir gave a moving performance of "Undzez Shtetl Brennt" ("Our Town is Burning") during the 70th Anniversary Commemorative of Kristallnacht at Temple Israel on Sunday, Nov. 9. Upper School English teacher Jackie Fishman also spoke at the event. On November 9-10, 1938, the Nazis staged 'pograms' against the Jewish community of Germany. These anti-Jewish riots came to be known as Kristallnacht, "Night of the Broken Glass," in which synagogues and Jewish-owned buildings were looted and destroyed. These riots resulted in the death of at least 91 Jews; 25,000-30,000 were arrested and deported to concentration camps.
