Dr. Ken Kneidel, an Advanced Placement biology teacher at Charlotte Latin School, is one of 50 teachers nationwide to receive a 2009 Siemens Award from the Siemens Foundation. Kneidel was recognized for his exemplary teaching and enthusiastic dedication to students and the Advanced Placement program.
Kneidel has taught at Charlotte Latin since 1988 and was honored with the school’s Flemm Award for outstanding teaching in 2004. He received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Pennsylvania State University and a Ph.D. in ecology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His interests include local and global environmental issues, and he has studied with ecologists in Costa Rica, Peru and South Africa. He serves on the Stewardship Advisory Committee for the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department, which advises the department on how to manage the county’s 26 nature preserves. He also serves on the Carolina Thread Trail steering committee and manages the annual Christmas Bird Count conducted by the Mecklenburg Audubon Society.
The Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement are awarded each year to students who have earned the greatest number of scores of 5 in eight Advanced Placement math and science exams, as well as to teachers and schools based on student participation and performance in Advanced Placement math, science and technology courses. One teacher from each state is chosen for the honor, which includes a $1,000 award.
