There was a time when Cayla Lowe wasn't good enough to represent her own middle school in track and field.
Now, she's weeks away from representing her country in the annual Down Under Games, a competition that allows high school athletes to visit Australia and compete against teams from the host country and other Pacific nations.
Lowe will leave for Australia on June 26 and return on July 9. The track and field competition is July 2-4.
Lowe is one of several Charlotte athletes and coaches participating. According to a list provided by Down Under Sports, Charlotte cross country runners Rebecca Sweeney (Mallard Creek High), Patrick Burton (Charlotte Latin) and Kyerra Hines (Providence Day) will also compete. Joining them will be another Charlotte Latin runner, Peter Lewis of Waxhaw in Union County.
Providence Day coach Ben Hovis will coach the N.C. cross country team. Fellow Chargers coach Carol Lawrence will coach the South's track and field team's sprinters and hurdlers.
Former Charlotte Latin coach Janae Whiteside is coaching a girls' basketball team. Her players will come from a wide array of states: North Carolina, Maryland, Texas and New Mexico...
