Community Day was held at Charlotte Latin School on October 13 to promote inclusion by inspiring appreciation for individuals’ differences and talents in order to build a stronger community. The event was organized by and for Upper School students, many of whom participate in Mosaic, the Upper School’s diversity club.

The Reverend Dr. Maria Hanlin (pictured above), executive director of Mecklenburg Ministries, was among a number of community leaders, including Mecklenburg County Commission Chair Jennifer Roberts and former Charlotte Mayor Richard Vinroot, who participated in discussions with students designed to promote a greater understanding of political, racial, ethnic and religious diversity. Mecklenburg Ministries promotes interfaith relationships, fosters racial and ethnic understanding and inspires collaboration to address social issues.

Community Day’s theme adopted Zulu phrases to emphasize the importance of each person. “Sawubona” conveys that an individual exists by expressing “I see you.” The appropriate response is “Ngikhona,” which translates from Zulu to “I am here.”
