Charlotte, N.C. – One hundred twenty-one seniors received their diplomas from Charlotte Latin School during commencement exercises on Friday, May 28, and will matriculate at 49 colleges and universities in the fall. Caroline Gill was named valedictorian and will attend Washington and Lee University. (More commencement awards)
The class of 2010 received acceptance letters from 134 colleges and universities in the U.S., Canada and South Africa and were offered merit scholarships totaling approximately $3.6 million. Eight seniors were awarded more than $100,000 each in scholarships.
More on the members of the class of 2010:
* Five received National Merit Scholarships, one received a National Merit Special Scholarship, 10 were named National Merit Finalists, and 13 were named National Merit Commended Students in the National Merit Program.
* One received a National Achievement Scholarship and one was named a National Achievement Semifinalist.
* One received and accepted the Jefferson Scholarship, which covers full tuition, room and board for four years at the University of Virginia.
* In the visual art component of the 2010 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition, 37 received regional awards, including nine who qualified for national judging.
* In the writing component of the 2010 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition, four received regional awards, including two who qualified for national judging.
* Though it is not a requirement for graduation, seniors completed 14,473 hours of community service during their time in the Upper School and 54 were inducted into the Charlotte Latin Service Society. One senior received a Gold Award, three seniors received Silver Awards and 10 seniors received Bronze Awards as part of the President’s Volunteer Service Program.
*During their four years in the Upper School, seniors captured 42 conference titles and 23 state titles in athletics. Forty-two seniors were named All-Conference athletes and 22 were named All-State athletes.
* Twelve will participate in athletics at the following colleges and universities: Brevard College, Centre College, College of Charleston, Cornell University, Furman University, Liberty University, University of Kentucky, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of the South (Sewanee), University of South Carolina, Virginia Tech and Wofford College.
