Broadway Stars Take the Stage at Latin

Legendary Grammy and American Music Award-winning recording artist Stephanie Mills and the Rev. Dr. Peter Wherry sang with members of Latin’s cast of The Wiz during a special visit to campus on November 2.

Ms. Mills, who debuted the role of Dorothy in the Broadway musical The Wiz when she was 17 years old, and Dr. Wherry, who performed as the Tin Man in the national and international touring companies of The Wiz, shared their memories of the show with Upper School students during an assembly in Thies Auditorium. They also visited with Upper School choral students, who sang several selections from the musical. Senior Christian Anthony, who plays Dorothy in Latin’s production of The Wiz, had the opportunity to sing “Home,” from the musical’s finale. “I never thought in a million years that I’d be standing here listening to someone else singing that song. I’m so thankful,” Ms. Mills said. She also remarked that the writers and producers of The Wiz would be “so proud” that their musical is being produced at Charlotte Latin. The Wiz will be presented in Thies Auditorium on November 19, 20 and 21.
