Celebrating African American history

CLS Director of Diversity Nick Wharton, Pape Ndiaye, Amad Shakur, and Upper School computer science teacher Greg Everett

Pape Ndiaye, owner of House of Africa and the founder of Charlotte’s Juneteenth Celebration, spoke to Upper School students and faculty during the African American History Month assembly on Wednesday, Feb. 10.

Ndiaye not only spoke to students about his native country, Senegal, and the differences between African and American culture, but he also emphasized the importance of studying cultures year-round. He noted that the Juneteenth Celebration, which commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and stresses education and achievement, serves as an educational tool in which members of the community can learn about African culture.

Amad Shakur, the director of development at the International Museum of Muslim Cultures, also spoke about the Juneteenth Celebration. He will be speaking at the NCAIS Student Diversity Conference on March 1.
