Charlotte Latin School senior Kasey Haas has been chosen as one of the 10 national winners of the 2009 AXA Achievement Scholarship in association with U.S. News & World Report. Haas was selected for the national award from a pool of 52 state winners and will be awarded a $25,000 scholarship, a laptop computer and the offer of a future internship with AXA. She plans to attend Brown University in the fall.
Haas launched Lexi’s Voice, an organization that supports and promotes community involvement for children with physical disabilities. With special events, community outings and one-on-one interaction, the group has helped these children improve communication skills and develop friendships.
The AXA Achievement Scholarship, in association with U.S. News & World Report, provides $670,000 in annual scholarships to young people throughout the nation. Fifty-two winners — one per state, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico — are selected by AXA’s nonprofit partner, Scholarship America, to receive one-time scholarship awards of $10,000 each. From the pool of 52 state winners, 10 are selected as national winners and earn an additional one-time scholarship of $15,000. All award recipients are young people who have demonstrated ambition, drive and dedication, and the ability to achieve in college.
The scholarship is a key component of AXA’s national philanthropic program, AXA Achievement. AXA Achievement is funded by the AXA Foundation, the philanthropic arm of AXA Equitable, one of the world’s premier financial services organizations.
Haas’ award is highlighted on www.usnews.com and in the May issue of U.S. News & World Report.
