19 area 'Odyssey' teams advance

By Steve Lyttle

The Charlotte Observer

Nineteen teams of students from the Charlotte region finished first or second Saturday in the Odyssey of the Mind State Finals and have qualified for the World Finals next month.

The group includes four teams from Charlotte Latin School and two each from Lake Norman Charter School in Huntersville and Brawley Middle School in Iredell County.

The State Finals were held at Wingate University, with competition in five events and three age levels that correspond roughly with elementary, middle and high schools.

In Odyssey of the Mind, teams of students are given problems to solve. Their solutions involve inventing devices and acting in skits that show how the devices can solve problems. The top two finishers in each division qualify for the World Finals, scheduled for May 26-29 at Michigan State University.

Teams will be raising money for those trips in the coming weeks.

Charlotte-area teams qualifying for the World Finals are:

Brawley Middle and Mount Mourne IB Middle in Iredell County.

Alexander Graham Middle, Carmel Middle, Charlotte Latin, Idlewild Elementary, Lake Norman Charter School, Myers Park High, Olde Providence Elementary, Pineville Elementary, Polo Ridge Elementary, Trinity Episcopal School and Villa Heights Academic Center in Mecklenburg County.
