International Studies

Charlotte Latin prepares its students for the global community by incorporating international studies and experiences into School life. Foreign language studies begin in Kindergarten, and each division incorporates aspects of international studies into the curriculum. For example, the Upper School history curriculum includes a collection of electives that emphasizes the society, geography, and politics of various regions of the world, including Africa, China, Russia, the Middle East, and Latin America. The student body itself reflects the School’s interest in the global community, with students from every continent except Antarctica represented.

The School often invites to campus guest lecturers who share with students their experiences and insights about the world. Past speakers include Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel, Chinese poet Bao Din, former Polish Prime Minister Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz, Francis Bok, author of Escape from Slavery, and Pulitzer Prize winner Dith Pran, inspiration for the movie, The Killing Fields, about his experiences in Cambodia under the tyranny of the Communist Khmer Rouge.
