Charlotte Latin prepares its students for the global community by incorporating international studies and experiences into School life. Foreign language studies begin in Kindergarten, and each division incorporates aspects of international studies into the curriculum. For example, the Upper School history curriculum includes a collection of electives that emphasizes the society, geography, and politics of various regions of the world, including Africa, China, Russia, the Middle East, and Latin America. The student body itself reflects the School’s interest in the global community, with students from every continent except Antarctica represented.
The School often invites to campus guest lecturers who share with students their experiences and insights about the world. Past speakers include Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel, Chinese poet Bao Din, former Polish Prime Minister Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz, Francis Bok, author of Escape from Slavery, and Pulitzer Prize winner Dith Pran, inspiration for the movie, The Killing Fields, about his experiences in Cambodia under the tyranny of the Communist Khmer Rouge.
Sister Schools
Charlotte Latin maintains eight Sister School relationships.
Our Sister Schools are:
* #2 Highschool in Luzhou City,
Sichuan Province, China
* Jugenddorf Christophorusschule in Oberurrf, Bad Zwesten, Germany
* Saint Marie Grand LeBrun in Bordeaux, France
* Colegios Gredos San Diego in Madrid, Spain
* Colegio de Marin in Buenos Aires, Argentina
* Istituto Russell Guastalla in Reggio Emilia, Italy
* Hilton College in Lion's River Magisterial Distrct, KwaZula Natal, South Africa
* St. Anne's Diocesan College, Hilton, South Africa
Students from these and
other schools often visit to learn about the United States and
to share their native cultures with their American classmates.
During the 2007-08 school year, Latin hosted five long-term
exchange students, and student groups from Argentina, China, France, Germany,
and Spain also visited. Students sponsored by
the American Field Service (AFS),Youth For Understanding (YFU),
and Study Group USA also attend Charlotte Latin periodically. Latin's
families and faculty often extend a warm welcome to our foreign
students by inviting them to stay in their homes during visits.
Study Abroad Programs
Charlotte Latin students participate in exchange
programs with our Sister Schools during summer breaks. In addition
to learning about other countries, students have the opportunity
to see how families live around the world by staying with host families
during their visits. At least one Charlotte Latin faculty member
accompanies each student group for courses that generally last two
weeks. Many teachers also offer mini-courses, which extend the foreign
visits and pursue studies of art, history, literature, and language
that enhance and complement the School’s curriculum.
Charlotte Latin students are encouraged
to participate in international exchange programs. Details of
future trips are available from Mrs. Heidi Carpenter, Director
of the CLS Study Abroad Program, at hcarpenter@charlottelatin.org.
Global Partners
The Charlotte Latin Parents' Council organizes the Global Partners
Committee, which provides support for the School's Student Exchange
Program. Parents' Council volunteers extend a warm welcome to the
students visiting Charlotte Latin from our sister schools by escorting
them on field trips, hosting social activities, and soliciting
host families. This hospitality is a reflection of the School's
emphasis on providing a global perspective for our students, as
well as a valuable educational opportunity for young people around
the globe.
