Charlotte Latin Mentoring Program

Wherever there are beginners and experts, old and young, there is some kind of learning going on, and some sort of teaching. We are all pupils and we are all teachers.
Gilbert Highet, Scottish-born American classicist

Experienced Charlotte Latin faculty members play a critical role in the professional development of a beginning teacher (0-4 years experience) and transmit the culture of the school community to experienced teachers new to Charlotte Latin School. Through participation in the mentoring program, both new and veteran faculty members acquire knowledge, skills, and positive attitudes that promote competence, confidence, collegiality, and life-long learning.

The program’s goals are to

  • acquaint new teachers with the culture of the CLS community, including school rules, policies, and procedures.
  • assist new teachers with inculcating the Charlotte Latin culture into all aspects of their job: lesson plans, teaching strategies, discipline techniques, student evaluation, and parent conferences.
  • pair each beginning (0-4 years experience) teacher with a mentor for a two-year period.
  • provide new faculty members with constructive feedback on their professional skills.
  • promote interaction, including class visitations, between new and veteran faculty members.
  • assist new teachers with the necessary procedures for licensure in North Carolina. (optional)
  • advance and strengthen the teaching profession as a whole and the culture of the School to promote and sustain a more collaborative learning environment.
