In our Upper School,
grades nine through twelve, we emphasize a love of learning,
a strong educational foundation for college, and preparation for adulthood.
The Upper School curriculum is focused on core courses in English,
Math, Science, Foreign Language, and History, with a heavy concentration
on the writing process, reading comprehension, and vocabulary
development.
A high value is placed on clear communication, with all departments
working together to encourage and support each student’s
personal and academic maturation.
Students move through courses in Math, Science, Computer Science,
and Foreign Language in a sequence that is most appropriate for their
skills. This option for acceleration ensures that grade level placements
do not limit course selection. Charlotte Latin offers formal Advanced
Placement courses in English, French, German, Spanish, Latin, U.S.
Government and Politics, Modern European History, United States History, Calculus
AB, Calculus BC, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Statistics, and Music Theory.
Grade point averages, which are based on courses taken at Charlotte
Latin, reflect additional quality points for Advanced Placement
courses and Honors courses.
The academic curriculum is enhanced and
balanced by Latin’s
outstanding arts and international studies programs. The benefits
of Latin’s integrated kindergarten through grade 12 visual
and performing arts program are evident in the level of accomplishment
demonstrated by Latin’s students. International studies courses
provide a unique opportunity for students to gain a global view.
Coupled with a strong Study Abroad Program, Latin’s curriculum
encourages students to learn about other peoples and their cultures.
In addition to providing a strong academic
program, Charlotte Latin’s Upper School is committed to
challenging students to examine values and exercise leadership.
The Honor Council, Student
Council, service clubs, athletic teams, community service opportunities,
and other campus activities allow students to participate, develop
leadership skills, and explore their individual interests.
Our college preparatory curriculum is offered on a semester basis.
A minimum of six courses is required each year, four of which must
be from four different areas. Each semester concludes with an exam
week. To meet graduation requirements, a student must have completed
21 units in grades nine through twelve.
