Sixth Grade
Humanities:
Language Arts: writing workshop, reading workshop, short
stories, novels, poetry, drama, myths, legends, folktales
Social Studies: World Geography; geography skills; Latin America, Middle
East and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, China
Math: Math 6: Concentrated review and consolidation course (Advanced
students are allowed to move to higher courses, regardless of grade level.)
Science: Life science: laboratory skills, matter, scientific
process, cells, human reproduction, genetics, "Life Skills Training"
Foreign Language: French 6 and Spanish 6: Oral comprehension and speaking
skills developed through projects and skits
Seventh Grade
English: Writing process, mythology, poetry, novels, short stories,
biographies, science fiction, oral presentations. Focus on heroic journey.
Social Studies: Ancient History: River Valley Civilizations, Ancient
Greece, Ancient Rome, Ancient China, the Middle Ages
Mathematics: Pre-Algebra; Advanced Pre-Algebra
(Advanced students are allowed to move to 8th grade courses.)
Science: Earth science: scientific process, ecology, astronomy, meterology,
energy and motion, water cycle
Foreign Language: French 7 and Spanish 7: Speaking and listening, writing
and reading skills learned through projects and skits. Introduction to
Latin offered as an elective.
Eighth Grade
English: Grammar, mechanics and developments in composition, selected
Shakespeare, introduction to genre. Focus on rites of passage.
Social Studies: Federal, state, and local government and the political
system; the rights and responsibilities of citizens in a democracy
Mathematics: Introductory Algebra; Algebra I; Advanced Algebra I, Algebra IA
(covers half of Algebra I); Geometry (Advanced students are allowed to take Upper School courses.)
Science: Earth science, geology, dendrology, volcanoes, topographic
maps, plate tectonics, natural disasters
Foreign Language: Spanish 8, French 8, Introduction to Latin, French
I, Spanish I, Latin I, German I
Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Grades
Computer Science: Keyboarding, word processing, spreadsheet and chart
making, Internet training with Netscape, PowerPoint projects
Art: Drawing, painting, ceramics, printmaking, crafts, paper sculpture,
textile design, bookbinding, basketry
Music: Band; Orchestra, Chorus for Girls, Chorus for Boys
Drama: Improvisation, theater games, verbal and
non-verbal situations, pantomime, script reading (grades 7&8)
Physical Education: Focus on fitness and team building through aerobic
activities, weight training, lifetime sports, team sports, and
Intramurals.

Sixth Grade: Enrichment: study skills, computer skills, reading, media

Seventh and Eighth Grades: Engineering for Girls,
